Sourcing strategies of U.S. service companies: a modified transaction-cost analysis

Article Abstract:

A survey has been conducted to examine the moderating effects of several variables concerning the relationship of asset specificity and internal sourcing of supplementary services in most service companies. Service providers tend to increase its reliance on supplementary services to create and maintain product differentiation from its competitors. Survey findings indicated that the relationship between asset specificity and supplementary service sourcing was negative. Supplementary services were defined as services that resemble standardized components and are utilized by firms to augment core services and gaining competitive advantage. However, even though these services are used to augment the core service, supplementary services with high asset specificity need not be sourced internally.
