Space: a challenge for Europe

Article Abstract:

The European Union needs to define a long term common space policy in order to safeguard its place in the industry and fight competition from emerging sectors in light of the increasing political, economic and military importance of space. The European Space Agency has played a major role in the development of space along with other industrial organizations like Arianespace, Eumetsat, and Eutelsat. The fragmentation and duplication of national capabilities in the 1980s seriously hampered European competition.

Space in Europe: new stakes, new structures?

Article Abstract:

European space development has traditionally been separated between the EC and the European Space Agency (ESA). Recent geopolitical and economic developments have made it plausible and imperative that Europe pursue a single space development program. However, any plan to integrate the functions of the EC and ESA faces several major political challenges. The EC cannot claim jurisdiction over the integrated space program because it may be criticized for over-stepping its powers.
