Spine loading and trunk kinematics during team lifting

Article Abstract:

Two-person or team lifting is popular when handling materials, with many situations occurring in the construction, healthcare, and furniture industries. It is hypothesized that team lifting may change trunk movements and subsequent spinal loading that would define risk of low back disorder. Trunk kinematic changes and spine loading changes that could occur when lifting in teams, compared with lifting individually, were assessed. Spine compression was found to be lower for two person lifts, when lifting in sagittally symmetric conditions, while lateral shear was greater for two-person lifts in asymmetric lifting conditions.

A comprehensive analysis of low-back disorder risk and spinal loading during the transferring and repositioning of patients using different techniques

Article Abstract:

Patient handlers are particularly susceptible to lower back disorder (LBD) problems. The range and nature of low back spinal forces and the risk of LBD linked to various patient handling tasks commonly used in patient care facilities were identified and evaluated, using a low-back disorder risk model and a biomechanical spinal loading model. Significant risk was found when transferring a patient with either one or two patient handlers, and repositioning techniques had significant risk of LBD.
