Starting to look at the digital picture

Article Abstract:

Silvermines is involved in a wide range of activities, and this has deterred some investors, but the company is carrying out disposals, following the appointment of a new chief executive, Ian Scott-Gall. Aerospace, electrical, and other loss-making and non-core operations have been sold, and a printed circuit board operation is also to be sold. A new managing director has been appointed for the video technology division, and this should boost its performance. The broadcast telecommunications division includes the BBC among its customers. The company will be able to make acquisitions following the disposals.

Cable merger logic

Article Abstract:

TeleWest key stockholders have pledged not to sell their stakes for 12 months, but a cash buy for the company does not seem likely. A merger with Cable and Wireless Communications (CWC) is possible and this could involve a stock swap. There are good reasons for consolidation in the cable industry which would boost the bargaining power of the companies involved. CWC and TeleWest are cooperating on the development of digital services and TeleWest has denied merger talks with CWC.
