Strategic reference point theory

Article Abstract:

The development and maintenance of a fit between predicted external demands and expected internal resources have always been an issue in the field of strategic-management research. One proposal that addresses this challenge posits that the choice of 'reference points' of a firm's management can enable it to attain strategic alignment that is instrumental for better performance and sustainable competitive advantage. Based on prospect theory, this aforementioned assumption is used as a springboard for the creation of a strategic reference point (SRP) matrix. This matrix consists of three dimensions: internal capability, external conditions and time. A strategic reference point theory is then developed. This theory describes how to achieve an optimal SRP structure. Suggestions for the application of SRP in research and practice are discussed.
