Medium-sized companies in northern England are involved in both traditional and modern activities. They include Cattles, which has benefited from the decision of major banks not to lend to low-income customers, leaving a gap for cattles to expand in. Firstbus has boosted its efficiency through investment and diversified into airports and railroads. Allen is a building concern which has expanded through acquisitions and organic growth. Silentnight ranks first in the UK bed market.

Smalls feel the strain

Article Abstract:

Smaller companies in northern England have been affected by underperformance of their stock prices in relation to the market as a whole since May 1997. There are still a number of thriving smaller companies in the region, and they include Calderburn, Victrex Plc and Thomas Locker Holdings. Northern Leisure, an operator of dance clubs, has expanded through acquisitions. Wainhomes is a construction company specialising in residential property which has seen a recovery since 1996.

Medium-sized companies in the Midlands region of England include Andrew Sykes Group, which hires and installs pumps, and Enterprise Inns, both of which have seen strong stock price rises. Perkins Foods is involved in fresh, chilled and frozen foods, and is performing well in terms of profit rises. Rubicon Group is an engineering firm which is also performing well. The company has undergone restructuring and is benefiting from this and from investment.
