Striking a balance

Article Abstract:

Investors from mainland Europe tend to place an emphasis on bonds, and this is a good tactic at a time when stock prices are falling and bond prices are rising. Investors tend to obtain a better long-term performance from equities, but United Kingdom government securities have performed well since 1990 and in some cases better than stocks. The UK economy is characterized by low inflation, and this means that there is less of a difference in the performance of bonds compared to stocks, which makes bonds attractive to investors who are averse to risk.

Club class

Article Abstract:

Investment clubs can help would-be investors with scarce funds who want to boost their confidence about investing on the stock market. Members pool funds every month to purchase stocks. They should seek to limit investments to what they can afford to lose, but clubs tend to represent a low cost and low risk form of investing. Experienced investors can gain new ideas from an investment club, while new investors can build up knowledge to develop their own portfolios.

Making ends meet

Article Abstract:

Experienced investors may see investment clubs as the terrain of novices, yet they too can benefit by learning more. The investment philosophy of the club should be decided early on, in order to avoid the pitfall of making random purchases. Research is important when making investment decisions, and each suggestion should be researched beforehand. Investment clubs can have a social function, as is shown by the example of the Pall Mall Investment Club.
