Structural changes and strategies in the North American flour milling industry

Article Abstract:

The structural characteristics, policies and competitive factors in the flour milling industry in the US, Canada and Mexico were examined to understand the effects of the NAFTA on the flour milling industry. The results showed that the flour milling industry has developed independently in each country due to protection. Consolidation has resulted in fewer but larger companies, larger production capacity and industrial concentration. US firms have integrated backward while Canadian and Mexican firms have integrated forward. The NAFTA also contributed to the blurring of geographical boundaries.
