Stubbed out

Article Abstract:

The UK government plans to ban tobacco advertising and the industry argues that this could lead to a higher consumption of cigarettes. Companies are likely to use direct mail promotions and price reductions in place of advertising, and prices can have some impact on cigarette sales. A campaign against smoking together with a ban on advertising in California was found to have reduced the number of smokers. The impact on advertising agencies will depend on how quickly the ban is implemented.

BAT stubbed out

Article Abstract:

BAT's share price has been affected by concern over litigation in the US. Two brokers from a sample of six rate the company's shares a buy, two rate them a hold and two rate them a sell. The buyers are BZW, which emphasises BAT's fundamental value, and Merrill Lynch, which sees litigation concern as overdone. The holders are NatWest Securities and Panmure Gordon, while Kleinwort Benson and Hoare Govett, both sellers, see BAT shares as overvalued.
