Sutcliffe Speakman: three's a crowd

Article Abstract:

Sutcliffe Speakman merged with Samuel Banner, a distributor of solvents, in Dec 1995. There should be some benefits from this merger, but there are also problems. There are two managing directors and disputes could arise as to who heads the company. Banner was the result of a management buyout carried out in 1991 and has performed well, but growth may not continue. Sutcliffe reported a profit of 541,000 pounds sterling with sales of 12.3 million pounds for the half year to Sep 1995.

Hickson

Article Abstract:

Hickson supplies specialty chemicals and has been affected by the cancellation of a contract with Unilever for detergent ingredients. This has hit interim profit for the company's fine chemicals division. Lack of buoyancy in the US construction industry has hit the company's timber coatings and protection activities. A profit of 14.1 million pounds sterling for full-year 1995 is forecast by Kleinwort Benson. Investors are recommended to sell shares in this company in Aug 1995.

Article Abstract:

Chemex International has two laboratories in the UK which perform analysis of chemical waste for the world market. The company's clients tend to be consulting engineers from the US who use outside firms for their lab work. Chemex could be attractive for investors planning a reverse takeover. The company's interim profit for 1995 to 1996 was good and Chemex shares are seen as good value and are recommended for investors in Jul 1996.
