Thermo BioAnalysis (TBA) is attempting to build itself into a vertically integrated life sciences company by purchasing financially troubled biotechnology companies. The company's complex structure and ambiguous focus confuse investors. TBA has experienced growth at a rate averaging 25% in the last three years and has seen its revenue grow from $22.5 million in 1995 to $201.9 million in 1997. TBA's president and CEO Colin Maddix considers the company an incubator that provides promising companies with financial support. TBA considers purchasing financially strained young companies that are based on promising technologies.

US courts thwart GM alfalfa and turf grass

Article Abstract:

The plantation of a genetically modified (GM) Roundup Ready variety of alfalfa grass is thwarted after the imposition of a preliminary injunction by US District Court. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) officials are questioned on the environmental impacts of genetically modified crops including rice and alfalfa.
