Review of software availability also analyzes practitioner application of various methods

Article Abstract:

A survey was conducted of subscribers to Taxation for Accountants magazine concerning their use of in-house tax return preparation software. Existing software was purchased by 96.8 percent of respondents, and 74.3 percent of users had been using their in-house software for 3 years or less. Ease of use was the most important reason for selecting a particular in-house tax package. Checking returns for errors was critical when using in-house software packages. The principal methods of printing tax returns were: laser printing, transparent plastic tax form overlays, computer-generated schedules, and preprinted forms. Over 76 percent of the respondents chose some type of preprinted form. The overall trend in in-house tax return software is for higher quality at a lower price.
