The Crane Experience

Article Abstract:

Crane Carton Company sought an alternative health insurance program that would help contain its rising health care costs. Analysis of claims revealed areas in which cost containment measures could be taken, and the new plan proved highly effective. Among the measures which effectively reduced costs are the following: a coordination of benefits with workers' spouses, paying a higher benefit rate for pre-admission tests done in an outpatient setting, encouraging employees to bring tests when entering the hospital, obtaining second opinions, using emergency care clinics, providing a 24 hour hotline for medical problems, and training employees in the correct use of insurance benefits. New hiring policies, health promotion strategies, and ongoing audits also keep health costs down.
