The EMU has landed

Article Abstract:

European monetary union (EMU) is scheduled to start in 1999, with eight members of the European Union (EU) set to take part. The United Kingdom, Greece, Denmark and Sweden are the only countries not likely to take part. EMU will affect portfolio management in a number of ways. There will be a currency effect as the new euro currency takes over from individual currencies. National boundaries of member countries will become less important. Stocks could come to be valued using pan-European methods. If the United Kingdom joins there will be less difference for investors between UK stocks and those of other EU countries in EMU.

Funds that come in shades of green

Article Abstract:

Ethical investment strategies may have different criteria. All ethical funds tend to avoid investing in alcohol, but there are gray areas. Some companies have a small proportion invested in alcohol, and others steer clear of the sector completely. Some ethical funds provide poor returns for investors, and others are less clean when examined closely. There are around 20 ethical trusts in the UK and the Ethical Investment Research Service monitors ethical policies and helps fund managers keep their funds ethical.
