The appeal of one stop shopping

Article Abstract:

Investment trust managers may have strengths in different sectors and investors can benefit from using different houses for each sector. Investors may prefer a simpler route which is to use one investment house which has a good reputation. A number of houses offer a wide range of sectors in order to persuade investors to stay with the house. They can also offer personal equity plans (Peps) and pensions that are tax efficient. Flemings is one house which offers a wide range of sectors, as does Henderson Touche Remnant.

Playing the discount

Article Abstract:

UK investment trusts are trading at a discount averaging 7% in 1995 compared with 22% ten years previously. There are benefits from holding investment trusts apart from discounts. These benefits include lower charges, a fixed capital pool and the ability to hold a long-term view. Discounts are likely to narrow as markets come into fashion and when interest rates drop or are low. Discounts also move when institutional investors sell big blocks. Investors can join savings schemes if they do not wish to follow ratings.

Discounts shrink but bargains abound

Article Abstract:

There are opportunities for investing in UK investment trusts in Oct 1996, though discounts are not as attractive as earlier in the year when discounts widened at a time when the stock market was rising. UK Income Growth trusts can offer opportunities due to concern over a possible Labor government and its effect on income stocks. Such trusts have lost popularity and discounts have emerged. International general is another sector where discounts can be found.
