The art market: Pable Picasso

Article Abstract:

Prices for works by Pablo Picasso increased during 1994, though there was a fall of 77% in the two years from 1990 when they were worth seven times their price in 1975. Prices fell following the sale of many works by the artist after his death, and did not recover until the late 1980s. Picasso's work varied in quality and the best works from the Cubist and Blue and Pink periods command the highest prices. Other works from the 1940s and 1950s were less inspired, so buyers should be selective.

The art market: LS Lowry

Article Abstract:

LS Lowry was a British painter whose work increased in value in the 1980s with an average price of 10,000 pounds sterling when the market was at its peak in 1990. A work was sold for a record 155,000 in 1992, but the average fell to a little more than 4,500 pounds in 1995 compared with 3,023 in 1975. Fourteen pictures by Lowry will be sold in the Christie's auction room, London, England, on Mar 23 1995, and this could help boost the market for his works.

Art and antiques: more for love than money

Article Abstract:

Investing in antiques and art objects should be carried out on a long term basis, and investors should seek to buy when prices are low. They should develop knowledge through research and specialization. The value of art objects is not likely to increase unless they are in good condition and their authenticity can be proven. Auction houses tend to give better prices for sellers and auctioneers have an interest in securing good prices for objects sold.
