The attractions of a low cost base

Article Abstract:

The West Midlands region of England is being marketed to foreign investors on the grounds of its low costs. Skilled labor can cost some half of German levels and some half of foreign investment in the West Midlands in the late 1980s was from West Germany. The region accounted for 21% of UK foreign investment from 1986 to 1990, but this fell to 13% in the early 1990s, mainly because investment from Germany fell. The region has benefited from investment by automotive companies, and aims to attract other types of investment as well.

New arrivals add spice to business recipe

Article Abstract:

Manchester, England, has performed well in the context of the north west region of England in attracting investment. Companies which have decided to invest in Greater Manchester include Siemens, Japan Tobacco and BASF. TECO from Taiwan has set up a 2 million pounds sterling operation at Trafford Park, Manchester. There is still concern that other English regions such as the north east perform better in attracting investment. Grants can be obtained but are not as accessible as grants for some other UK regions.

Inward mobility

Article Abstract:

Bradford and Leeds, England, have both benefited from inward investment but the regin of Yorkshire and Humberside has not benefited as much as most other regions in the UK in 1997. Much investment in Bradford has been through existing companies expanding, sometimes after they have been bought by a foreign buyer. Leeds offers good communications, and its inhabitants have high disposable incomes, factors that attracted Harvey Nichols to the city.
