The venerable Shanghai Stock Exchange's main rival is the Shenzhen Stock Exchange, an new capital market that generated the bulk of action in 1997 and represented 56.1% of all trades in China as of Oct 1996. In 1995, the Shenzhen Stock Exchange's market share was but 26.1%. The Shenzhen Stock Exchange, which triggered a bull market in 1997, has evolved into a national market as it has increased its listings and boosted trading volumes. The popularity of the Shenzhen Stock Exchange has resulted in the growth of bucket shops, which in turn, has attracted the attention of the Chinese Securities Regulatory Commission.
