The cornerstones of competitive advantage: a resource-based view

Article Abstract:

The relationship between a firm's performance and its resource endowments is examined. Maintaining competitive advantage requires that four conditions be met: intra-industry heterogeneity, imperfect resource mobility and ex ante and ex post limits to competition. The first condition implies that firms of different resource endowments and capabilities within the same industry must be able to survive in the market. Imperfect resource mobility, on the other hand, implies that resources are firm-specific and thus difficult to bid away. Finally, prior to and subsequent to a firm's gaining superiority in resources, there should be measures that limit competition for economic rents (ex ante) and for market position (ex post). Applications of this framework to business and corporate strategy are discussed.
