The cost of having the wrong genes

Article Abstract:

Insurers are concerned that clients will take out policies after genetic testing and insure themseleves against diseases which the tests show that they are likely to suffer from. Insurers may go against a United Kingdom government committee which has called for a moratorium on usage of genetic testing information by insurers. Insurers argue that clients should not be forced to undergo tests, though they wish to have the test results. Some 67% of people die of causes linked to genes, and not everyone can be rejected by insurers, but premiums could be raised for some clients.

Low risk, low return

Article Abstract:

Guaranteed income bonds are offered by United Kingdom life insurance companies, which provide an income in exchange for a lump sum, returning capital after a set period of a year to 10 years. The insurer invests in stocks and other vehicles to achieve the income. The rates paid to investors are better when annual rather than monthly payments are taken. There are risks to capial if infaltion and interest rates rise, and interest rate rises could leave income bond investors tied to low rates.

Switching to cheaper life insurance

Article Abstract:

Competition in the UK life insurance industry has led to a drop in premiums and this means that policy holders may be better off if they move to a new policy. This may be with the same insurer. Companies were concerned about the possible impact of Aids on claims, but these fears have receded, leading to a drop in rates. Policyholders may be advised to retain their policies if they were taken out over five years ago since insurance becomes more expensive as people grow older.
