The electronic way of keeping in touch

Article Abstract:

Telecom Gold has installed more than 36,000 electronic mailboxes in the United Kingdom, and is one of the few profitable electronic mail service suppliers in the world. The advantages of electronic mail (e-mail) over more conventional forms of message transmission (such as telephone, Telex, facsimile and postal services) are that e-mail is cheaper, more reliable and quicker. There are a few side benefits as well; with e-mail, message senders can see whether their messages have been read and can code messages for immediate action and response. Various types of electronic mail services are described and analyzed. The costs of Telecom Gold services are: 40 pounds sterling per month per mailbox, with minimum service charges of 10 pounds sterling monthly, or 300 pounds sterling per month for corporate users with an unlimited number of mailboxes.

PSS-IPSS - a gateway to the world

Article Abstract:

Packet switching data transmission services, such as the PSS-IPSS system available from British Telecom and Telenet in the U.S., allow on-line information services to transmit data nationally and internationally without setting up their own computer networks. The advantages to packet switching services available in the U.K., their cost, the hardware and equipment required by these services, their reliability and security, and the information services to which they afford users access are described. The major packet switching services available in the U.K. are: British Telecom's PSS-IPSS, Istel's Infotrac, and Mercury's PSS. Multistream services available from British Telecom that improve the user's access to information databases and other sources are described as well.
