The emerging paradigm of strategic behavior

Article Abstract:

Explanations for strategic behavior have been set forward through several empirically tested theories that apparently conflict. It is suggested that the theories vary because they stemmed from examination of organizations in different milieu. A paradigm framework is suggested that would allow for and legitimize these various theories. An organization's strategic evolution is influenced by a three-way feedback mechanism among environmental forces, internal arrangement, organizational dynamics, and strategy.

Critique of Henry Mintzberg's 'The Design School: Reconsidering the Basic Premises of Strategic Management.' (appeared in the Strategic Management Journal, vol. 11/3, 1990, 171-195)

Article Abstract:

Henry Mintzberg expressed his view that the 'design school' and other prescriptive schools of strategic management are ineffective, and proposed his own model of strategy formation in a recently published paper. This paper evaluated Mintzberg's critique and his proposed strategic management model based on methodological soundness and factual veracity. Both were found to be deficient according to the two criteria.
