Research news: thermal imaging equipment for firefighters

Article Abstract:

Cairns and Brother, New Jersey, top firefighting equipment supplier, has awarded a contract to GEC-Marconi Avionics for the supply of hundreds of advanced thermal imaging sensors, which will be incorporated into firefighters' helmets. GEC-Marconi Avionics' Sensors Division has developed a new sensor technology which will be used for the first time in the Cairns' Infra-Red Imaging System (IRIS). The system will help firefighters to pinpoint a fire's seat and also be of use in search-and-rescue efforts.

An integrated high temperature superconductor microwave system/cryocooler demonstrator

Article Abstract:

High temperature superconductors (HTS) were discovered in 1987, and work is being carried out on applications and development of systems. Performance improvements can be obtained through using HTS materials with microwave equipment. A demonstrator has been constructed to illustrate this. A fully integrated design has been achieved and this can be shown through shock tests and through thermal cycling tests using system components and prototypes.
