The evolution of cooperation in strategic alliances: initial conditions or learning processes?

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to investigate the development of cooperation in strategic alliances between firms. More particularly, this research aimed to decipher how this evolution is undermined by the conditions at the inception of the alliance and affected by the collaboration process that subsequently emerges. A longitudinal case study of projects in three alliances was undertaken, which served as the basis for a framework for the analysis of the evolution of cooperation in strategic alliances. Successful alliance projects were discovered to be significantly evolutionary and passed a series of interactive cycles of learning, reevaluation and readjustment. On the other hand, unsuccessful alliance projects were very inertial and involved minimum learning or divergent learning between cognitive understanding and behavioral adjustment, or frustrated expectations.

The evolution of firm networks: from emergence to early growth of the firm

Article Abstract:

Research presented concerns whether the success of new firms can be more attributed to cohesive social networks, or to sparse networks with many structural holes. The authors suggest that the networks of developing firms must evolve in order to adapt to the company's changing resource needs and challenges, with firm growth related to both social and structural ties.
