Boat-building chairman says he will defeat rebels

Article Abstract:

Walker Wingsail Systems chairman, John Walker, faces a stockholder rebellion at a meeting on Nov 29 1997. There are over 6,000 stockholders who have invested almost twelve million pounds sterling in the company since 1987, but it has not achieved a profit. The company was set up to produce a boat using metal sails and has only built two boats. Walker argues that the company will become profitable from 1999 and will break even from 1998. He aims to retire in 1999 and float Walker Wingsail on the Alternative Investment Market.

It's enough to make you go green

Article Abstract:

Environmental protests can lead to a drop in the stock price of the company that is targeted. Targeted companies can lose customers, as occurred with Huntingdon Life Science. Demonstrators may damage equipment, and there may be surveillance costs. A whole sector may be affected, as has occurred with road building in the United Kingdom. Companies can seek to co-operate with environmentalists, and this may become more important in the future if the ethical investment movement increases in importance.
