The medium is the message

Article Abstract:

A study by Ludwig and group reported the derivation of two new human embryonic stem (hES) cell lines under the most defined conditions to date, using feeder-independent culture with recombination of extracellular matrix components. The elucidation of factors that support hES cell growth has remained unresolved partly because of the reliance of many researches on ill-defined, proprietary medium formulations and a continuing requirement for inactivated feeder cells.

The selfish stem cell

Article Abstract:

Two new studies have provided new approaches for optimizing the culture of human embryonic stem (ES) cells. These two studies have provided insights into the mechanisms driving selection of variant human ES cells and also the approaches to optimizing culture conditions to reduce their selective advantage and a means to eliminate variant cells when they appear.

Neurotrophins mediate human embryonic stem cell survival

Article Abstract:

Human embryonic stem (hES) cells express receptors of the troponyosin-related kinase (TRK) family, which mediate antiapoptotic signals. Neurotrophins might improve hES cell survival and it might also facilitate their manipulation and the development of high-throughput screens to identify factors responsible for hES cell differentiation.
