The next century - prospects for space

Article Abstract:

Two scenarios on the effects of space research on world peace are presented. The origins of space research did not begin in 1957 when the first artificial satellite was launched but began 100 years previously. Modern space research has resulted in the development of Teflon, Velcro, anti-reflection coatings and portable life-support systems. The first scenario tells of a world united in saving the biosphere, where living conditions have improved and the colonization of Mars will become a reality. The second scenario presupposes that space research will not continue, resulting in greater pollution for the planet and where wars among peoples will continue.

The space risk and commercial space insurance

Article Abstract:

The risk involved in space travel has necessitated the entry of insurance companies in the space arena. There are four different catagories of commercial space insurance, namely, pre-launch, launch, in orbit and re-entry. The commercial space insurance was introduced in Anglo-Saxon countries, and subsequently in France and Germany. Today, space insurance has become the concern of a small group of insurance firms as the competition is restricted. Technological development has increased space activities, and the reliability of space transportation systems calls for greater insurance, lower premium and less compensation.

Supplying earth-observation data from space

Article Abstract:

The financial, economic and policy problems being encountered in the establishment of an Earth Observing System (EOS) were analyzed. The EOS is a 15-year remote sensing program being planned for the middle of the 1990s. Financing of the EOS is calculated to be $52 billion for the 15 years of its operation. Proponents to alternatives to the EOS have proposed the usage of many but smaller spacecraft in order to avoid an over-all failure of an EOS and will be less expensive. EOS proponents, however, claim that economies of scale may not be attained if numerous spacecraft are used.
