The organizational structure of the North American fresh tomato market: implications for seasonal trade disputes

Article Abstract:

The tomato industries of North America have all employed various strategies such as cost reduction, product differentiation, and market segmentation as a reaction to increasing global competition and liberalized trade. Tomato growers and shippers from the states of California, Florida, and Mexico have extended their shipping seasons to be able to supply customers with continuous supplies throughout the year. Fierce competition from Florida has prompted the introduction of extended shelf life tomatoes in Mexico which has resulted in an increase of FOB prices.

Managing quality in California food processing firms

Article Abstract:

Plant managers and quality control personnel were surveyed to identify the critical factors and techniques in promoting quality management in food processing firms in California. Results indicate that food processing companies perform well in the senior management level of quality control. However, they rate low on employee training and worker awareness. Further, it was shown that companies which distribute the responsibility for quality control over the entire plant and all manufacturing processes had the most effective quality control system.
