The puck stops here

Article Abstract:

Blockbuster Video has been ordered by a court to pay a $1-million prize won by a contestant, in a major consumer promotion in 1994. The video rental company staked the monetary prize to any contestant who could shoot a hockey puck through a 3-inch wide, 1-inch high slot, a feat which Randy Giunto achieved when he sent a puck partially through the opening, during the second intermission of a Florida Panthers' game in March 1994. However, he was only awarded a year's supply of soda and some videos, because a form that was given to him before his attempt stated that the puck had to go completely through the slot. Giunto, who commissioned a lawyer after a team employee later implied that he deserved to win the prize, gained the approval of a jury in Miami, FL, in 1998.

Lucky call

Article Abstract:

Ameritech has collaborated with the Illinois State Lottery in its most recent promotion for its pre-paid phone cards. Since July 1998, consumers who have bought the $10 Ameritech phone card received a free $1 Lotto quick pick ticket, while a $2 Lotto quick pick ticket was given away to those who purchased the $20 Ameritech phone card. The cross-promotional effort provided Illinois residents a chance to win the jackpot at the Illinois Lottery, while allowing consumers to save on phone time by using the Ameritech cards, according to Doug Whitley, president of Chicago, IL-based Ameritech.
