The risks of risk reduction in the payment system

Article Abstract:

Proposed Federal Reserve System payment system risk reduction measures could damage the almost risk-free treasury operations of many businesses, forcing them to seek other options. National Corporate Cash Management Assn (NCCMA) members are concerned about the costs such risk reduction measures might entail. NCCMA suggests that the vast majority of depository institutions utilize techniques that minimize risk, and that emphasis should be placed on locating, monitoring, and controlling chronic offenders. NCCMA also opposes a Federal Reserve proposal to change the posting and finality of certain automated clearinghouse items. NCCMA believes that these posting changes would negatively affect corporate cash management.

Risks grow in banking: why ratings are falling

Article Abstract:

Corporate cash flow managers will have to monitor ratings systems such as Moody's Investors Service's in the future. This service has been steadily downgrading bank credit ratings for several years. Increased competition from securities companies, mutual funds, insurance companies, and other financial intermediaries has taken bank business. Computers and related technologies permit rivals to perform some banking functions better, faster, and cheaper. Banks have been left in the position of supporting risky loans while attempting to regain their former status by entering similarly risky financial markets.
