Financial system development in transition economies

Article Abstract:

Issues regarding financial system development in transition economies discussed at a conference in Groningen, Netherlands, in Dec 1997 are discussed. Particular attention is given to the role of regulation in stock markets, the significance of creating an independent central bank and alternatives for deposit insurance.

The short-term effects of foreign bank entry on domestic bank behavior: does economic development matter?

Article Abstract:

The short-term impact of foreign banks entry on the functioning of domestic banks and the extent to which it depends on the economic development is examined. Findings suggest that the entry of foreign bank improves the efficiency of domestic banks and the level of economic development is an important factor that determines the short-term impact.

A study of the corporate governance of thrifts

A study of corporate governance within the thrift industry distress and legally mandated regulatory vigilance is presented. The influences of regulatory discipline in the thrift industry on the action of the disciplinary mechanisms on thrifts during a period, in which managerial discipline is most likely to occur, are examined.
