The smart-card fiction

Article Abstract:

Smart cards have yet to find wide acceptance among industries due to infrastructural and cultural issues. While the Dept of the Treasury and Siemens have been able to demonstrate the benefits of using smart cards, the technology will remain alien to many institutions. In fact, the slow adaptation of smart cards is being attributed to a lack of support from major sectors such as the government and the banking industry. Others dismiss the promise of smart cards, claiming that there is no real need for them yet.

The house cleaner

Article Abstract:

Massachusetts Treasurer Shannon O'Brien has put an emphasis on internal controls in the state treasury as part of her clean up measures. Prior to O'Brien's election, separation of duties was virtually non-existent which provided numerous opportunities for fraud. In addition, no manual on internal safeguards was made by O'Brien's predecessors. Upon her ascension, O'Brien quickly moved in to improve the internal audit structure along with greater segregation of individual responsibility.
