The sanity in volatility

Article Abstract:

British stock prices have become increasingly volatile in 2000, and this applies to old economy stocks, as well as new economy stocks which are less easy to value. Investors are unsure whether new technology stocks will fulfil hopes, or whether they will be undermines by newer technology, and whether old economy stocks will again rise in value. Changes in expectations lead to greater volatility, which may only be short term. Covariances have dropped, so the market as a whole is not showing greater volatility, despite volatility for individual stock prices.
