The wealth effects of interstate branching

Article Abstract:

The decision of the Office of Thrift Supervision (OTS) to allow federally chartered savings and loan associations (SLAs) to engage in interstate branching has brought substantial positive wealth effects on large savings and loans associations and commercial banks. Smaller financial institutions have experienced minimal or no effects as a result of the decision. Though it appears that large financial institutions are the primary beneficiaries of interstate branching smaller organizations are expected to retain their competitiveness due to the demand for personalized financial services at the grassroots level.

Consolidation and universal banking

Article Abstract:

The consolidation of the banking industry has given a whole new meaning to universal banking as banks enter new markets such as securities through their Section 20 securities subsidiaries. While evidence shows that the entry of banking institutions in securities processing via the Section 20 route has been relatively pro-competitive, this may not be the case for banks that conduct securities activities via acquisitions. As a matter of fact, entry by acquisition could deplete the number of competitors in the market for investment banking services.
