Theory and practice of revolution

Article Abstract:

Newt Gingrich and other Republican party leaders have seen their 'Contract with America' programme, which focused primarily on changes in domestic policy, pushed aside by debates about the role of the US in helping to overcome the financial crisis in Mexico. The new approach being led by Gingrich is clearly against the country's banks, and leading financial institutions are expressing great concern about adding a balanced budget amendment to the constitution. This approach will attact considerable interest from other countries, but will not be implemented while the Republicans are still not in control of the administration.

Deja vu in the land of manana

Article Abstract:

The financial crisis in Mexico of 1995 has parallels with the crisis of 1982, in that there has been large-scale lending by US banks to Mexico. This has contributed to an unsustainable balance of payments deficit for Mexico. The North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta) boosted capital flows to Mexico and can also provide a support structure for Mexico. US exports to Mexico are likely to be affected by the crisis, as is the flow of capital to other Latin American countries.

Consumers cloud a cheerful mood

Article Abstract:

UK consumer confidence is weak in early 1995, as is illustrated by a fall in house prices. Demand was forecast to rise in 1995, but new entrants to the housing market are discouraged by higher interest rates and a reduction in tax concessions. Tax increases from April 1995 will also affect consumer confidence. There is concern that a drop in the value of pound sterling would lead to a rise in interest rates which would further affect consumption and economic growth.
