Things doctors miss

Article Abstract:

Doctors can fail to detect serious illnesses because many symptoms are often associated with benign conditions. Health problems such as rashes, menstrual disturbance, tiredness, headaches and weight gain/loss are often dismissed as harmless because they are very rarely caused by threatening diseases. Not counting gross incompetence, there are four major reasons why general practitioners and specialists alike misdiagnose serious illnesses. One cause is the hasty performance of the medical examination. Doctors in a hurry are not thorough and are likely to miss important clues. Another reason is making a diagnosis over the telephone since this forces the doctor to rely on the medical observation of people who are not qualified to give it. The third reason is the failure of patients to return when the treatment has proven ineffective. The final reason for misdiagnoses is over-familiarity with the patient, which causes doctors not to take symptoms seriously.
