National Express could achieve operating profits of over 200 million pounds sterling from its railroad operations in the seven years from 1997. The company is also expanding its bus operation which has increased its operating margins, and will be able to combine bus and railroad services. The company has appointed Phil White as chief executive, and he has resources for acquisitions. National Express could achieve a profit of 74 million pounds sterling for 1997 prior to exceotionals, and 83 million pounds for 1998, according to NatWest Securities.

Phil White has replaced Ernest Patterson as chief executive at National Express. Patterson had only been in the post for under six months and his departure will cost the company severance pay which could be as much as 300,000 pounds sterling. National Express took over six months to appoint Patterson, and White was a possible candiadte when White was appointed. Shareholders may ask why White was not appointed instead of Patterson, whom National Express claims left for cultural reasons.
