Trait recognition: an alternative approach to early warning systems in commercial banking

Article Abstract:

The usefulness of trait recognition (TR) as an alternative earning warning system (EWS) for detecting failure in the US commercial banking sector is examined. The TR model and logit EWS models are compared in terms of their classification and prediction power. Findings indicate that TR is superior to logit not only with regard to classification and prediction, but to identification strength as well. The results suggest that the TR model may be a useful EWS tool for regulators, bankers investors and other interested in bank condition.
