Treasury workstations: build vs. buy

Article Abstract:

Using manual cash management systems, account reconciliations once required three days to complete and longer to analyze; today, automation and treasury workstations can perform these cash management functions in 30 to 40 minutes. Moreover, such automation can be achieved entirely on microcomputers. The most popular off-the-shelf software program for cash management purposes is Lotus 1-2-3, although companies with treasury management information systems are almost evenly split between those that purchased systems and those that developed their own (19 percent bought existing systems, while 16 percent developed theirs in-house). Decreasing costs for treasury management information systems and planning techniques when implementing such systems are also discussed.

Sterling commercial paper market holds future promise

Article Abstract:

Low rates may eventually make sterling commercial paper a popular method of short-term capital raising. Sterling commercial paper is issued in London and strongly resembles United States commercial paper, the chief difference being the Sterling CP is denominated in British pounds sterling instead of dollars. When the issues volume of the Sterling CP market increases, the rates should come down even further, making the paper a cheaper financing vehicle than the London Interbank Offering Rate (LIBOR). Another advantage is that paper can be issued for up to one year, as opposed to the 270-day limit on American markets.
