UAL Corp

Article Abstract:

UAL Corp Chmn and Pres Stephen Wolf's Feb 1992 purchase of 20,000 shares costing $3 million signifies his long-term plans for the $11 billion airline holding company. His current holdings total 95,000 shares, a rather hefty investment for someone who was rumored to leave the company. Wolf predicted losses for the March 1992 quarter and attributes it to a reduced market share compounded by poor geographical location. UAL's 1991 losses amounted to $332 million. It does not pay dividends on its 24 million common shares and institutions own around 69%.

CSX Corp

Article Abstract:

CSX Corp lost $272 million in 1991 after two special charges of $490 million and $200 million in connection with the company's payment of the post-retirement health and welfare benefits of its non-contract workers. Standard & Poor's Corp (S&P), while maintaining its Triple B rating on CSX, warned of continued pressure on the company's credit measures brought about by the two charges, and CSX's huge debt and operating lease burden. S & P, however, expects CSX to profit from the upturn of activity in the rail industry.

Chicago & North Western Holdings

Article Abstract:

Stock analysts have predicted earnings of $1.50 to $1.55 a share for Chicago and North Western Holdings in 1992. The speculation represents a multiple of 15 to the current price of $21. The rail system sustained a $1.3 billion debt during the 1989 buyout but some observers think that the firm's cashflow can compensate for the loss. Analyst Remy Fisher projects a 50-cent per share quarterly earnings due to anticipated rise in freight tonnage level. Joel Price believes that the firm is set for a major recovery.
