UK: POOR RESULTS FOR SOMERFIELD

Article Abstract:

City analysts are pessimistic about the future of struggling supermarket chain, Somerfield, one of whom expressed doubts about whether the group would survive beyond the end of 2000. However, despite interim profits being down almost 50% on 1999, Somerfield's chief executive, David Simons remains optimistic, and said that the group was starting to correct its mistakes. With 45 out of the 140 stores sold, over 40 are still on the market and 57 will be kept on.
