UK: ASDA TO STREAMLINE SUPPLY

Article Abstract:

Aiming to improve communication throughout the supply chain, UK supermarket group, Asda, is to reduce the number of its suppliers and concentrate on developing a closer and more harmonious working relationship with them. The group will elect key suppliers for each category and category captains for each section. Rather than communicating through a buyer, Asda will choose around 180 companies who will receive information directly.

UK: SUPERMARKET LINKS WITH OIL FIRMS CRITICISED

Article Abstract:

The Petrol Retailers Association has launched an attack on the increasing links between supermarkets and oil companies. It says alliances such as Tesco Express, which Tesco has set up with Esso and is set to be expanded by the forthcoming opening of 150 new forecourt sites, are damaging consumers' interests and will drive smaller competitors out of the market. The association wants the government to launch an inquiry and to appoint an independent regulator to overlook practices.
