UK: SUPERMARKETS FOCUS ON HOME ENTERTAINMENT

Article Abstract:

Supermarket retailers are increasing their range of home entertainment products, dedicating more space to the fixture as Christmas approaches, and giving it a more dominant position in stores. Alongside the CDs and videos already stocked by major multiples, computers, televisions, CD and cassette players and computer games consoles are now being offered. The development threatens to take market share from electrical retailers, as supermarkets have the latest releases at the same time as other stores, and frequently offer the best prices. Potential drawbacks include a lack of specialist advice and sales support, and a failure to offer consumers access to products before they buy them. Consumers, however, are becoming more accustomed to blind purchases, with a large percentage of computers already being bought by mail order. Supermarkets may now begin to sell via their Internet sites, with space-saving possibilities allowing for higher margins, lower prices and volume sales.
