US technology indices have typically increased by some 60% during the past year. However in the UK there is no official benchmark for the technology sector, as high tech industries are of comparatively modest scale. UK high tech companies are spread across the FT-SE-A All-Share sub group. Panmure Gordon has developed a UK Smaller Company Electro-Technology Index, Patrix, which consists of 57 smaller companies, which can be described as genuine techn stocks.

Electronic mail systems eliminate hand-written messages and call- backs for message delivery. Time management and accurate messages are two areas where such systems prove their cost-effectiveness. Over 100 telephone answering services now use an electronic mail system. Hewlett-Packard implemented an electronic message printing system connected to its existing phone system.
