USDA scrutinizes GM organism regulations

Article Abstract:

On January 22 2004, the officials of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA, Washington, DC) announced that a major overhaul of the department's biotechnology rules that cover releases of genetically modified plants would be conducted. A broad review of the department's biotechnology regulations that include an environment impact statement (EIS), which will assess the potential effects of GM organisms on the environment, has also been planned by USDA Secretary Ann Veneman.

EPA re-evaluates StarLink license

Article Abstract:

Aventis CropScience's request to allow restricted consumption of its StarLink corn by humans is being considered by regulators in the US. Aventis is asking that the corn be approved since little of it remains on the marketplace and that it does not endanger public health. StarLink corn has been suspected of carrying an allergen.
