Unigate spreads it thickly

Article Abstract:

Unigate has been affected by problems in the UK market for liquid milk as supermarkets increase their market share, providing lower margins for milk suppliers. The company has reduced its bottling capacity and disposed of peripheral business activities. Unigate also acquired a spreads and margarine concern from Kraft in Jul 1996 which brought in the Golden Churn brand to St Ivel spreads. The company holds a 14% stake in the UK market. Disposals have affected earnings per share but profits should recover due to acquisitions and cost savings.
