Unlocking a den of equity

Article Abstract:

The amount of unmortgaged equity in the United Kingdom is estimated at 360 billion pounds sterling, the Council of Mortgage Lenders has calculated. Equity release schemes can be used by homeowners who use the value of their homes to borrow funds and do not repay them until they no longer need to live in their homes. Home income plans are a traditional type of equity release scheme and are available to homeowners aged 70-years-old and above. These plans can be used to purchase an annuity which provides both an income and enough funds to pay interest on the mortgage. The loan is repaid when the house is sold.
