Article Abstract:

The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales is scheduled to hold an important Special Meeting in Jun 1992. This meeting will emable members to cast their votes on 10 key resolutions. Five of these resolutions cover the proposed increases in fees and subscriptions that are intended to ease the funding problems being experienced by the Institute. The sixth resolution aims to improve the Institute's cash flow, while the seventh and eighth resolutions relate to the Institute's responsibilities with respect to regulation, discipline and maintenance of the public interest. The final two resolutions deal with the restructuring of the Joint Disciplinary Scheme established by the Institute in conjunction with the ACCA and the Scottish Institute. Given the importance of the resolutions to be decided upon, members are urged to carefully analyze the issues before casting their votes.

Europe - from the Azores to the Urals

Article Abstract:

The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales is carefully studying the implications of the planned broadening of the European Community's (EC) membership base by the end of the 1990s. The Institute's leaders believe that valuable professional opportunities shall result from the expected entry into the EC of the European Free Trade Area countries. They also realize that an enlarged EC shall require the resolution of the key issue of mutual recognition of accounting qualifications. The Institute's leaders also acknowledge that Institute members can increase the British accounting profession's influence by playing a vital role in the strengthening of the financial infrastructure of eastern European countries. The Institute is therefore expanding its international work to ensure that it can effectively promote and safeguard the profession's interests in Europe.
