Utilities: jewel in the utility crown

Article Abstract:

UK utilities can diversify by taking on outside work and managing the administrative functions of other companies. Vertex was set up by United Utilities and manages services for the parent utilities. The company is also seeking new contracts. Hyder Services is also involved in this market. The outsourcing market could provide attractive growth rates for United Utilities which could be over 25% annually. This compares with low growth rates in the water and electricity industries.

Powerful, not boring

Article Abstract:

PowerGen is one of the largest utilities in the United Kingdom, and is likely to play a major role in changes in the electricity industry. the company is also unaffected by the strength of pound sterling and the Asian financial crisis. The company is less likely to be affected by regulations than are water utilities, and PowerGen has gained political support by agreeing to buy coal from RJB to help preserve coal mining jobs. The company is more likely to be permitted to buy a regional supplier than it was in the past.
