Vertical cooperation in agricultural production-marketing chains, with special reference to product differentiation in pork

Article Abstract:

Market imperfections and conflicting interests often hinder the optimization of individual stages with a production-marketing chain (PMCh) in agriculture. Vertical integration and product differentiation have been suggested as more appropriate alternatives to optimizing the PMCh in agriculture. These approaches are especially appropriate given the growing interest in quality of products and production processes. An analysis of the Dutch pork industry was conducted to illustrate the advantages of adopting vertical integration and product differentiation in PMCh optimization.
